This past Saturday, I had the great opportunity to join a Zoom session hosted by my dear friend Paul Martinelli—an extraordinary leader and the original visionary behind the John Maxwell Certification program. Though my schedule was packed, I felt the nudge to jump in, even if only for a few moments. And as it so often goes, that one moment delivered just the right word at just the right time.
Paul said
something simple but incredibly profound:
"You can’t receive what you resent."
Let that settle in for a moment.
You may say you want love, but deep down, are you still carrying resentment because of past heartbreak or betrayal? You pray for clarity and obedience, but inwardly resist the very thing God is nudging you to do.
God desires to pour out His best, but we must make space in our hearts, free of bitterness, fear, and resistance.
Hidden resentment can quietly take root and block the very blessings we’ve been asking for.
Here are just a few ways that kind of resentment can show up:
Resentment toward parents due to rejection or unmet emotional needs.
Resentment toward authority or leadership from being overlooked or mistreated.
Resentment toward success from believing it’s selfish or out of reach.
Resentment toward rest if you feel guilty for not always being
productive.
Resentment toward vulnerability because trust was broken before.
And yet, we want to receive those very things.
But here’s the truth: Resentment closes the heart. Gratitude opens it. You can’t fully receive what you secretly push away in your spirit. This week, I invite you to pause and reflect. What areas of your life are you asking God to bless… while holding quiet
resentment?
Freedom begins with awareness. And healing begins when we surrender it all to God.
